In 1952, the Air Force took over Wichita Municipal Airport and founded McConnell Air Force Base between Wichita and Derby. Many airmen found homes in Derby when space on base became occupied. [9] From 1950 to 1956, the city population grew from 432 to approximately 5000 people. [9] In 1956, the city name was officially changed to Derby. [10]

Derby High School, formally Derby Senior High School, has been located in four different buildings since 1911. The current Derby High School building, which is located East of Rock Road, North of Madison and South of James, was completed in the Fall of 1993 and is the largest high school building in Kansas in terms of square footage. Although the Kansas Constitution was amended in 1986 to allow the sale of alcoholic liquor by the individual drink with the approval of voters, Haskell County remained a prohibition, or "dry", county until 2023, after voters in the county approved the 1986 amendment with a 30% food sales requirement.
