Thrixopelma ockerti, commonly known as the Peruvian Flame Rump or Flame Rump Tree Spider, is a species of tarantula and the type species of the genus Thrixopelma. It is endemic to Peru and was first described by Gunter Schmidt in 1994. [1] It is named ockerti after the collector Roland Ockert. [1]
The spiders in the genus can grow to have a leg span of 13 to 18 cm (5 to 7 in). Their body length ranges from 17 to 48 mm (43 ⁄ 64 to 1 + 57 ⁄ 64 in). [4] [5] While some other araneomorph spiders have a longer leg span, the largest Phoneutria species have the longest body and the greatest body weight in this group. [6]
Females live up to 15 years, while males only live to 4. [1] Sexual dimorphism is present in this species in two forms, females being heavier and by the coloration. Males own a very dark blue almost black carapace and a black opisthosoma covered in black hairs, with some reddish hairs near the end.
