Old Main is a red-roofed Victorian Gothic building on the campus of Texas State University.Situated at one end of the quad, it was Texas State's first building, built in 1903, and remained the only building on campus until 1908.

The Tribal College movement developed as part of the Native American "self-determination" movement of the 1960s. [7]Federally recognized tribes wanted to have more control over the education of their children and ways to pass on their culture, and develop contemporary skills to build economic capacity.
Texas has "no legal mechanism to recognize tribes," as journalists Graham Lee Brewer and Tristan Ahtone wrote. [7] The Texas Commission for Indian Affairs, later Texas Indian Commission, only dealt with the three federally recognized tribes and did not work with any state-recognized tribes before being dissolved in 1989. The Texas legislature abolished the Lamar University System in 1995 and moved Lamar—Orange into the Texas State University System. In 1999, the legislature renamed the institution as Lamar State College—Orange. The campus has grown to 12 buildings across three city blocks.
