Alan McCrae Moorehead, AO, OBE (22 July 1910 – 29 September 1983) was a war correspondent and author of popular histories, [1] most notably two books on the nineteenth-century exploration of the Nile, The White Nile (1960) and The Blue Nile (1962). Australian-born, he lived in England, and Italy, from 1937.
A Russian of high class, he was an enlisted officer in the Caucasus, where he had gone arguably to escape his gambling, and the debts he had accrued. At the age of 26, he went to the site of the siege of Sevastopol, during the Crimean War, 1854. He wrote despatches there for the St Petersburg literary journal/newspaper The Contemporary.
