It was 1867 which laid the foundation to the school in Sri Lanka, the Roman Catholic English School, in Kurunegala. It was initiated by the parish priest of Kurunegala church, Francis Saviour. There were 28 boys and 19 girls enrolled on the first year with two teachers. The medium of the language was only English.
Mother M. Josephine Bastide took charge of the new community in November 1870. The first building of the school was located where the Kurunegala Post Office stands today. Classes began in this building. Sisters lived in two houses, one was then known as Daniel’s House. By 1871, classes in both English and Sinhala medium were begun.

The College was subsequently changed to an Advanced Teachers' College. By 1976, the College was completely detached from Kwara College of Technology and formally named Kwara State College of Education to be sited in Oro.
