That's how Jesse Jo Stark, the creative director of L.A.-based jewelry label Chrome Hearts, describes her new collaboration with the 131-year-old pearl jewelry maker Mikimoto.
Mikimoto developed the island as a center for pearl production. In 1951, Mikimoto renamed it Mikimoto Pearl Island and set up a company to develop it for tourism. A commemorative museum of the life of Mikimoto was established in 1958 and a Pearl Museum in 1962. A bridge connecting the island to the mainland was completed in 1970.
Today, pearl diving has largely been supplanted by cultured pearl farms, which use a process widely popularized and promoted by Japanese entrepreneur Kōkichi Mikimoto. Particles implanted in the oyster encourage the formation of pearls and allow for more predictable production. Today's pearl industry produces billions of pearls every year.
Mikimoto inserts nucleus in a pearl shell. In 1888, Mikimoto obtained a loan to start his first pearl oyster farm at the Shinmei inlet on Ago Bay in Mie prefecture with his wife and partner Ume. On 11 July 1893, after many failures and near bankruptcy, he was able to create the hemispherical cultured pearls.
However, Mikimoto Kōkichi's discovery and production of the cultured pearl in 1893 produced a great demand for ama. He established the Mikimoto Pearl Island in Toba and used the ama 's findings to grow his business internationally. [5] Nowadays, the pearl-diving ama are viewed as a tourist attraction at Mikimoto Pearl Island. [6]
