Namdaemun Market (Korean: 남대문시장) is a large traditional market in Seoul, South Korea. It is located next to Namdaemun , the main southern gate to the old city. [ 1 ] The market is among the oldest extant markets in Korea, having opened during the Joseon period in 1414.
The Hangyangdoseong stretched over 18.6 km (11.6 mi) and were renovated several times. Before the 2008 fire, Namdaemun was the oldest wooden structure in Seoul. [5] The city gate , made of wood and stone with a two-tiered, pagoda -shaped tiled roof, was completed in 1398 and originally used to greet foreign emissaries, control access to the capital city, and keep out Siberian tigers , which have long been gone from the area.
