Copley Township is one of twenty-one townships in Knox County, Illinois, USA. As of the 2010 census, its population was 348 and it contained 235 housing units. [2] In the 1850 report, the township was named Prince Albert Township. It was later named Richfield Township, and the name was changed to Copley Township on June 8, 1853.

It is the only Copley Township statewide. [4] Copley was originally called Greenfield, after Gardiner Green (son-in-law of painter John Singleton Copley [5]), who owned a large portion of the township. Later on he changed the name to Copley, the maiden name of his wife. [6]
Variant names were Greenfield and Copley Center. [1] The first settlement at Copley Center was made around 1819. [2] The community was named for its location near the geographical center of Copley Township. [2] A post office called Copley Centre was established in 1835, the name was changed to Copley in 1841, and the post office closed in 1957. [3]
