"Buffalo Gals" is a traditional American song, published as "Lubly Fan" in 1844 by the blackface minstrel John Hodges, who performed as "Cool White". Whilst the song is often attributed to John Hodges it is likely to have a history that pre-dates its publication. [ 1 ]

There is some dispute as to whether he composed the tune or adapted a traditional air.
The title is borrowed from the song "Buffalo Gals" where the first line of the chorus is "Buffalo gals, won't you come out tonight?" It won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette and the World Fantasy Award—Novella in 1988, and was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novelette and the Theodore Sturgeon Award. [2]
