The road previously stretched from the Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman junction to the Kepong Roundabout before the separation with Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah which was formed in 2014. The road obtained its name as the only road towards Ipoh from the city centre back then, and is part of the country's Federal Route 1 .
