The railway between Scarborough and Whitby opened in July 1885, with most stations on the line, including Robin Hood's Bay, opening on the 16th of the month. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Robin Hood's Bay had two platforms which worked as a passing loop, with the station buildings, mostly made of stone, on the south side (Scarborough bound direction) of the station.

Whitby is a railway station serving the town of Whitby in North Yorkshire, England. It is the southern terminus of the Esk Valley Line from Middlesbrough . The station is owned by Network Rail ; its mainline services are operated by Northern Trains and its heritage services by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway .
The line north from West Cliff closed in May 1958 and thereafter, the station was the reversing location for trains between Whitby Town and Scarborough. [14] The station closed completely in June 1961. Services for the Scarborough and Whitby Line reversed at Prospect Hill Junction until closure of that line in 1965. [15]
The station, located 10 miles 30 chains (16.7 km) north of Scarborough Central and 11 miles 22 chains (18.1 km) south of Whitby West Cliff, was opened on 16 July 1885 and was originally named Peak as it was situated at the highest point on the line at 631 feet (192 m) above sea level.
