The North Carolina Press Association (NCPA) was formed in 1873. It supports newspapers, readership and advertisers throughout the state. The NCHSAA was founded in 1913 by Dr. Louis Round Wilson, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.The university served as the primary source of funding and leadership for the Association from 1913 through 1947, before the organization adopted its current model, which provides school administrators with direct influence through the presence of the NCHSAA Board of Directors.

The High School Journal grew out of the quarterly The North Carolina High School Bulletin which was published from 1910 to 1917, and which was begun with the aim of improving North Carolina schools and was edited by Prof. N.
