Lamech is the eighth-generation descendant of Adam (Genesis 5:25), the son of Methuselah, and the father of Noah (Genesis 5:29), in the genealogy of Seth in Genesis 5. In Genesis 5:12-25, Lamech was a son of Methuselah, who was a grandson of Jared, who was a grandson of Kenan descended from Adam. [3]
Lamech and Cain, 1524 engraving by Lucas van Leyden Lamech (/ ˈ l eɪ m ɪ k /; [1] Hebrew: לֶמֶךְ Lémeḵ, in pausa לָמֶךְ Lā́meḵ) is a figure appearing in the Old Testament's Book of Genesis, where he is the seventh generation from Adam and father of Jabal, the first breeder of livestock, Tubal-Cain, the first metalworker, Jubal, the first musician, and Naamah.
When Lamech is 182, he begets Noah, and the Genesis Flood comes when Noah is 600 years old. [6] This would imply that Methuselah dies the year of the Flood. (In the Septuagint, most of the ages in this section are different. Lamech begets Noah at age 188, and Methuselah lives 802 years after begetting Lamech. [7])
The Sethite line begins with Adam. [1] The Sethite line in Genesis 5 extends to Noah and his three sons. [2]The Cainite line in Genesis 4 runs to Naamah. [citation needed] The seventh generation Lamech descended from Cain is described as the father of Jabal and Jubal (from his first wife Adah) and Tubal-cain and Naamah (from his second wife, Zillah).
The Samaritan chronology has Jared, Methuselah, and Lamech dying in Noah's 600th year, the year of the flood. The Masoretic chronology also has Methuselah dying in Noah's 600th year, but the Masoretic version uses a different chronology than the Samaritan version, with about 350 extra years between creation and flood.
Enoch instructs Methuselah to assure Lamech that he is Noah's father. Columns 3–5 contain Enoch's speech, which overlaps well with the Aramaic text found in 1 Enoch 106–107 from 4QEn. It is this overlap that provides the strongest evidence that the Genesis Apocryphon was using the Book of Enoch as a source, rather than being dependent on ...
The Naamah mentioned in the Bible is a Cainite, a descendant in the lineage of Cain (the daughter of Lamech and sister of Tubal-cain). However, a Sethite Naamah is named as the wife of Noah (see Rashi 's commentary on Genesis 4:22), and a daughter of Enoch , Noah's great-grandfather, in the early Jewish midrash Genesis Rabba (23.3) [ 3 ] [ 4 ...
The Genesis Rabba midrash lists Naamah, the daughter of Lamech and sister of Tubal-Cain, as the wife of Noah, [10] as does the 11th-century Jewish commentator Rashi in his commentary on Genesis 4:22. In the medieval midrash Book of Jasher , the name of Noah's wife is said to be Naamah, daughter of Enoch .
