La Salle Township is in eastern Monroe County, about 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Monroe, the county seat.Its eastern boundary is the shore of Lake Erie.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 26.86 square miles (69.57 km 2), of which 26.57 square miles (68.82 km 2) are land and 0.29 square miles (0.75 km 2), or 1.07%, are water. Fighting Island is administered by the town of LaSalle, but it is privately owned by the German-based BASF, which has a facility across the river in Wyandotte. The island originally had a small indigenous population before it was purchased by the Michigan Alkali Company in 1918. The company used the island as a dumping ground for waste.
In 1918, the land was bought by John B. Ford of the Michigan Alkali Company and was used as a location to deposit waste from their industrial plants which produced soda ash, lye and baking soda.
