The episode focuses on Steven Universe confronting Pearl with questions about the supposed shattering of Pink Diamond millennia ago, and builds to a major plot twist for the series: the revelation that Steven's mother Rose Quartz was actually Pink Diamond herself, who faked her death with Pearl's assistance.
As the Diamonds' spaceships were destroyed in the previous battle, in order to travel to Homeworld, Steven unearths Pink Diamond's long-abandoned ship, which is shaped like a giant pair of legs, from her junk pile in the desert. Steven, Pearl, Garnet , Amethyst (Michaela Dietz), Connie (Grace Rolek), Yellow, and Blue prepare for the journey.
White Diamond (Christine Ebersole) turns Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl into drones, and tries to convince Steven that he really is Pink Diamond, wrongly convincing herself that she is someone else. Attempting to restore Pink to her true self, White pulls Steven's gem from his body.
The Diamonds regroup, as Yellow Diamond (Patti LuPone) assists Blue Diamond out of the wreckage and destabilizes Peridot (Shelby Rabara)'s body, reducing her to her gemstone. When Steven tries to step forward to explain that he has Pink Diamond's gemstone, Yellow Diamond steps on him with fury, knocking him unconscious.
Steven is put on trial before Blue and Yellow Diamond for Rose Quartz's assassination of Pink Diamond. During the trial, Steven's attorney, a Zircon, analyses the evidence and argues that the public account of Pink Diamond's death doesn't make sense, and suggests that the true facts of the case have been covered up.
