Loop 473 was designated along an old alignment of US 281 on January 31, 1969, through the city when US 281 was relocated along the Henry S. Grace Freeway. At first, the Loop 473 designation was a hidden, internal one as the route was publicly signed as Bus. US 281 while the route originally terminated at its northern intersection with US 281.

Jacksboro is located in central Jack County. U.S. Route 281 runs through the city center, leading south 31 miles (50 km) to Mineral Wells and northwest 58 miles (93 km) to Wichita Falls. U.S. Route 380 joins US 281 in the center of Jacksboro, but heads west out of town on Belknap Street, leading 27 miles (43 km) to Graham.

State Highway 319 was designated on September 26, 1939, as a route from Jacksboro southeast into Fort Worth, replacing a portion of SH 34. Note that this was to be SH 281 in the initial renumbering plans. This route became the eastern extension of SH 199 on October 30, 1939. [198]
