Avery County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina.As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,806. [1] The county seat is Newland. [2] The county seat was initially established in Elk Park when the county was first formed, but was moved to Newland upon completion of the courthouse in 1912.
The library was founded by Elroy M. Avery as the Avery Library and Historical Society. [2] The charters and papers of incorporation were created on December 22, 1919; the Avery Library and Historical Society formally opened within the Snell building with a collection of approximately 2,000 volumes on April 10, 1920.
