June credits Martha with raising her and says Aunt Martha was practically the only mother she ever knew. June spent summers as a girl with her. Beaver was named for Aunt Martha's brother, Theodore, and, in one episode, Beaver receives her brother's heirloom ring. The boys call Martha their "umbrella aunt" because she once gave them umbrellas on ...
Aunt Martha arrives to tend house when June goes out of town. She buys Beaver an outdated outfit, consisting of an Eton jacket, short pants with suspenders, knee-length socks, a bow tie, and a cap, and she expects him to wear it to school. He reluctantly does, and his classmates ridicule him, provoking a fight.
But they are forced to stay home when Aunt Martha arrives with a friend, the formidable wife of a general. Wally and Beaver do whatever they can to speed up Aunt Martha's visit, all the while trying to be polite. The politeness doesn't come through. When the ladies depart after lunch, Ward offers to drive the boys to the carnival but they sulk.
Note: During this episode's flashback scenes featuring Aunt Martha, Young Kelly and Young Oliver are played by Juanita Kiff and Mark Snee, the real life siblings of series stars Kaleena Kiff and John Snee, respectively. Irene Tedrow, who plays Aunt Martha, reprises the role in the episode "Ensign Cleaver" later in the season.
In one episode, June has a sister named Peggy and an infant niece. She also has a spinster aunt named Martha Bronson (Madge Kennedy), who appears in a few episodes during the course of the series' run. No other relatives of hers appear on the show. June credits Martha with raising her, which suggests that June may have been a motherless child.
