The church was the venue of the session of the Second Philippine Commission under William Howard Taft which founded the province of Zambales on August 28, 1901. The church administration in the province went to the Society of the Divine Word in 1928 and the Columban Fathers in 1951. [ 4 ]
The original commune established by the Spanish friars is now barrios Bani and Tugui. For the majority of its early history, the church became the center of evangelization throughout northern Zambales, even being named by a Recollect chronicler as "La Mejor Iglesia y El Mejor Convento" (The best church and the best convent) in Zambales.
