38 Special, often stylized as .38 Special or spelled out as Thirty-eight Special, is an American rock band formed by singer-guitarists Donnie Van Zant (born Donald Newton Van Zant on June 11, 1952) and Don Barnes (born Richard Donald Barnes on December 3, 1952) in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1974.

He is best known as a member of the band 38 Special, from its formation in 1974 until 2013. He is the middle of three sons; his older brother Ronnie was the original lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd who died in a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi , and his younger brother Johnny has been the lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd since 1987.
Barnes rejoined 38 Special in 1992 and has remained with them ever since. As of 2021, he is the only original member still with the band. [ 2 ] His solo album was released on June 30, 2017, on MelodicRock Records.

While in Billy Satellite, he was a studio musician for Taxxi, an English band that played Euro-tech music. [1] [5] He recorded three albums with Taxxi from 1982 to 1985, including States of Emergency, Foreign Tongue, and Expose. [5] In 1987 after the break up of Billy Satellite, Chauncey joined 38 Special, staying with them through 2019. [1]
