Gladwin County is a headwaters area. Most of the water that flows out of the county via the Tittabawassee River comes from Gladwin County, only a very small portion flows in from Clare or Roscommon counties.

Gladwin had its beginnings in 1875 during the Michigan lumber boom. Situated on the Cedar River, the city was named Cedar until it was discovered that another Michigan town shared the same name. Thereafter, the city was named after the county. [8] The first church in Gladwin was a Methodist church completed on March 31, 1878.
Gladwin Township is a civil township of Gladwin County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,118 at the 2020 census. [3] The city of Gladwin borders at the southwest corner of the township, but the two are administered autonomously.
The township was named after Lowell P. Sherman, an early settler. [4] Sherman Township was established in 1889. The township contains the county's only designated Michigan State Historic Sites: the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and Zion Evangelical Lutheran School on North Oberlin Road, which were both built in 1904.
As of the census [1] of 2000, there were 994 people, 471 households, and 319 families residing in the township. The population density was 49.3 inhabitants per square mile (19.0/km 2).
