Trentham Racecourse is the main thoroughbred horse racecourse for the Wellington city area in New Zealand. It is located in the suburb of Trentham in Upper Hutt, next to Trentham Military Camp. The races are conducted by the Wellington Racing Club. The first race meeting was held there in January 1906. [1]
The Masterton Opaki Jockey Club was formed in 1872. Racing began on the Opaki Race Course on Boxing Day in 1885 with trains traveling from Wellington for the occasion. On 12 August 1896, the name was changed to the Masterton Racing Club and on 23 October 1987 the last meeting was held on the Opaki Course which then became a training centre.
The Canterbury Jockey Club was established in 1854 and held its first meeting at Hagley Park in Easter 1855. The Riccarton racecourse was reserved as a public recreation ground by the Canterbury Provincial Council in 1858 and leased to the Jockey Club. Given the prestige of the race, there was some disappointment at the news that the race would lose its Group One status from 2009. The Wellington Racing Club responded to the downgrade by reducing the distance to 2400 metres in order to attract a higher quality field.
