The Indiana State Legislature passed an omnibus county bill on February 7, 1835 [3] that authorized the creation of thirteen counties [4] in northeast Indiana, including Jay - the only county in the United States named for John Jay, co-author of The Federalist Papers, Secretary of Foreign Affairs under the Articles of Confederation, and first Chief Justice of the United States.

Bearcreek Township is one of twelve townships in Jay County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 1,587 (up from 1,578 at 2010 [2]) and it contained 465 housing units. [1]
The largest county is Allen (657 sq. mi., 1,702 km 2) and the smallest is Ohio (86 sq. mi., 223 km 2). [3] According to the Constitution of Indiana, no county may be created of less than 400 square miles (1,000 km 2), nor may any county smaller than this be further reduced in size, which precludes any new counties. [4]
