Although the elementary and grades 7–12 are housed in College Springs, at one time there were two elementary schools located in Braddyville and Coin. [citation needed] The high school has always been located in College Springs. The 1960 K–12 enrollment was approximately 600 but enrollment has plummeted to less than 200 students.
Sutherland was born in Scotch Grove, Iowa, and attended Amity College, in College Springs, Iowa. He taught school and studied law, being admitted to the bar in 1888. He set up practice in Nelson, Nebraska, becoming the prosecuting attorney of Nuckolls County 1890 until 1896.
