Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service was founded in 1974 when the former Northamptonshire Fire Brigade and Northampton Borough Fire Brigade (both formed in 1948 by the Fire Services Act 1947) merged. In April 2021, Moulton Logistics Centre closed down, leaving Moulton Fire Station and the service's workshops behind.
As a result of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Northamptonshire (Fire and Rescue Authority) Order 2018 and as of 1 January 2019, the governance of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service is the responsibility of the PFCC. Prior to this change, it was the responsibility of 57 council members within the Northamptonshire County Council.

The service is free to the end user in the case of an emergency. Funding for the fire service comes from two principal sources: a central government grant, and a small levy on the local council tax.
