It is the 8th largest hospital by beds in the United Kingdom, [2] popularised for its television coverage from 1987 to 1996. It is managed by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The hospital is home to the Leeds Cancer Centre which provides specialist Oncology services to Leeds and the wider West Yorkshire region. [3]

The hospital has its origins in the Bradford Public Dispensary founded in 1825. [1] It opened at Darley Street in 1827 and moved to Westgate as the Bradford Infirmary in 1843. [ 2 ] In December 1882 the infirmary staff responded to the Newlands Mill chimney collapse which resulted in the loss of 54 lives, mostly young girls and boys.
It runs the Leeds Eating and Drinking Team which aims to tackle the growing problem of malnutrition. [1] In April 2015 the trust was criticised by the Care Quality Commission which raised concerns about insufficient staffing levels and a “high reliance” on temporary staff, particularly at the South Leeds Independence Centre.
