The quality of the top models by marques like Premier, Carlton, Ajax, Autocrat (John Grey), and Beverley is as good as the American equivalents. George Way visited the UK in the early 1930s when he was working for Leedy, and you can see how the ideas from the Leedy drums were immediately utilized in the British models.

Vintage Premier = Top notch, among vintage drums. I have a 70’s Premier 2000 snare in 100% original condition, no chrome flaking or pitting. Another 14”x4” Piccolo from the same era, also in pristine condition and all original. And I have a wood 2000 which is called Premier 2001 snare in black which is matching to my Premier kit.
It's a shame that so few companies offer a 6" x 14" size standard. (Or even as an option.) In my experience, it offers the benefits of 5" and 6-1/2" deep snares in one drum. My Tama Starphonic Aluminum snare has risen to the top of my favorite metal snares because of its tonal flexibility as a result of its depth.

Rim shots are very controllable, yet ghost notes still cut through. Just a very nicely balanced, easy-to-play snare drum.
I've played 12 inch snare drums and find the smaller diameter limits certain drumming techniques and interferes with brush playing. As always, everyone's own mileage may vary. But again, if anything, for the reasons listed, I'd go 14 or larger as a main snare rather than smaller. May 21, 2017.
Most of my custom built (and damn near all of my vintage) snare drums have 30 degree edges. I have had a few custom ones made with 45s so all of my drums don't sound the same. I have been drooling over a craviotto 14 x 7 snare with 30 degree bearing edges. It has some great sound samples. I guess I am going to make the trek to test it out!
36. Location. Los Angeles, CA. I own 6 wood snares and and 4 metal snares. In my opinion, I would take a 6 1/2 x 14 Ludwig aluminum Supra 402 over any snare I have ever played or owned. I also like a cast top hoop and Puresound 30's on this snare. I have also had Ludwig brass and bronze as well as Yamaha steel snare.

Reaction score. 749. Location. NJ. That's an Ajax shell Boosey&Hawkes English Rogers drum that someone put a Rogers USA badge on. Only Rogers USA had grey lacquer interiors. There were indeed Holiday snare drums before grey lacquer with black or even white interiors. But this is not a Rogers USA drum.
