Stone Mountain Freeway is a freeway in the north-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It connects Interstate 285 (I-285) east of Atlanta , with the suburbs of Stone Mountain and Snellville before transitioning into an arterial road that continues to Athens .
The original plans for the Atlanta freeway system (map, p.2 [permanent dead link ]) included several freeways that were never built.One was a north-south freeway parallel to, and 2–3 miles (3.2–4.8 km) east of today's Downtown Connector (I-75/85), connecting the southern end of today's Georgia 400 with I-675 at the southeast Perimeter.

The 1946 map is the earliest one that showed the eastern part Atlanta on that city's inset. It showed, before 1947, US 78 routed along the current length of US 278 from Atlanta to the Belvedere Park–Avondale Estates city line, and SR 10 from that point to just north of Stone Mountain. The highway originally turned right onto Lawrenceville Highway, joining US 29 and SR 8 for a short distance southward before separating at Hugh Howell Road, a roadway connecting Tucker to Stone Mountain Park, and terminating at Stone Mountain Freeway (US 78/SR 10). However, this segment of SR 236 was removed in 2024.
Each of those freeways would have continued beyond the termini of I-485. SR 410, the Stone Mountain Freeway, would continue east beyond the I-285 perimeter highway, and SR 400 would extend both south and north outside the perimeter. A short piece of I-485/SR 410 was constructed from I-75/I-85 east to Boulevard Northeast.
This portion is named the Stone Mountain Freeway, and provides an excellent view of Stone Mountain for eastbound motorists. The route then proceeds east across Gwinnett, Walton, and Oconee counties. In Oconee County, US 78 leaves Moina Michael Highway at the SR 316 interchange, turning right and running concurrent with SR 316/US 29.
