The largest number of tourist overnight stays and the most numerous tourist accommodation facilities are recorded in Italy, especially in the Veneto region (around Venice). The Adriatic Euroregion was founded on 30 June 2006 in Pula, Region of Istria, Croatia. The association changed its statutory name Adriatic Ionian Euroregion in January 2013. It represents a model of co-operation that includes trans-national and inter-regional co-operation between regions of the Adriatic and Ionian coastline.
It covers an area of 7,858 km 2 and is the fifth smallest region of the country. It borders Austria to the north and Slovenia to the east, the three countries meeting at the tripoint on the mountain of Dreiländereck, known as Monte Forno in Italian. To the south, it faces the Adriatic Sea and to the west the Veneto region.
