The TO-220 package is a "power package" intended for power semiconductors and an example of a through-hole design rather than a surface-mount technology type of package. TO-220 packages can be mounted to a heat sink to dissipate several watts of waste heat. On a so-called "infinite heat sink", this can be 50 W or more.
Chip-size package (CSP) developed by National Semiconductor [21] COB: Chip on board: Bare die supplied without a package. It is mounted directly to the PCB using bonding wires and covered with a blob of black Epoxy. [22] Also used for LEDs. In LEDs, transparent epoxy or a silicon caulk-like material that may contain a phosphor is poured into a ...

Vishay Semiconductor have released 20W resistors in TO-220 form. so this indicates the expected heat dissipation of the package with a heatsink. source: "TPR Thick Film Technology 20 Watt Power Resistors TO-220 Package". there are 50W zeners in TO-3, and 10W in DO-4, 100W in DO-5 (for comparison). 7805 in TO-220 and TO-92 packages Internal die of a Tesla MA7805 78xx (sometimes L78xx , LM78xx , MC78xx ...) is a family of self-contained fixed linear voltage regulator integrated circuits . The 78xx family is commonly used in electronic circuits requiring a regulated power supply due to their ease-of-use and low cost.
The physical view of multi-leaded power packages are simply stretched TO-220 packages. Components made in multi-leaded power packages can handle more power than those constructed in TO-220 cases, or even TO3 cases with thermal resistance no less than 1.5 C/W. [1] One well-known STMicroelectronics brand of this type of package is Multiwatt. [2]

Size comparison of BJT transistor packages, from left to right: SOT-23, TO-92, TO-126, TO-3 3D model of TO-3 package. In electronics, TO-3 is a designation for a standardized metal semiconductor package used for power semiconductors, including transistors, silicon controlled rectifiers, and, integrated circuits.
