As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,645. [1] The county seat is Leon. [2] This county is named for Stephen Decatur Jr., a hero in the War of 1812.
Decatur was the first county seat of Decatur County, until 1853, when the seat was transferred to Leon. [5]Decatur was incorporated in 1875. [6]In 2023, the city council had the city's name clarified through a vote in the regular city election (public measure) as previously there are documents calling it both Decatur and Decatur City.
