RLO TV - this was another legal/pirate television station (Satellite and UHF), broadcast in Limerick by Radio Limerick One in 1999 and 2000. An official licence was granted for the satellite service in 1997 at which time digital broadcasts began making this the first digital television channel in Ireland beating RTÉ by years.
Television in the Republic of Ireland is available through a variety of platforms. The digital terrestrial television service is known as Saorview and is the primary source of broadcast television since analogue transmissions ended on 24 October 2012.
The majority of major cable systems in Ireland now use fibre optics, however some smaller systems still use a mixture of microwave links, UHF antennae and direct satellite feeds to local headends. By the 1980s cable television was well-established as the most popular multi-channel television reception system in Ireland.
Ireland currently uses the DVB-T standard with MPEG-4 compression. MHEG-5 is also used for epg and interactive services. The Broadcasting (Amendment) Act 2007 assigned one multiplex to RTÉ to ensure the continued availability of the four former free-to-air services in Ireland – that is, RTÉ 1, RTÉ 2, TG4 and TV3.

All HD channels in Ireland broadcast at 1080i. There are currently two channels available to Saorsat viewers, three channels available to Saorview viewers, one-hundred-and-eleven channels available to Sky Ireland viewers and sixty-six channels available to Virgin Media Ireland viewers on their respective EPGs.
RTÉ operates four national television channels; RTÉ One, RTÉ2, RTÉ News and RTÉjr. Virgin Media Television operates four channels (Virgin Media One, Virgin Media Two, Virgin Media Three and Virgin Media Four) and remains Ireland's biggest independent broadcasters. TG4 is a public service broadcaster for Irish language speakers.
1950s in Irish television – The television service for the Republic of Ireland did not begin until 1961, but preparations for its introduction were being made throughout the 1950s, while in Northern Ireland the first television service came on air in 1955 with the launch of the BBC television service for Northern Ireland.
