Most cats don't experience any side effects from the use of Metacam, however, as with any drug, some do. In a field study conducted by the manufacturer, 8.3% of the cats experienced elevated levels of kidney functions in blood tests. 12.5% of the cats experienced post-treatment anemia (compared with 6.3% in the control group).
Buprenorphine is an opioid and they’re notoriously constipating, luckily gabapentin is in a different drug class and shouldn’t cause constipation. My cat has taken 100 mg before traveling in the past and the only side effects were drowsiness/sleepiness aka the intended effect haha
That cat was no more 'sedated'/inactive/'stoned' than any of my others. One further point: While Gabapentin can/will cause sedation initially, that effect is seen to wane over time, as the cat's system adapts to it....see this (see "Side Effects"): Gabapentin (Neurontin) - Veterinary Partner - VIN. I see that he will eat wet foods.
Eh, gabapentin can definitely cause withdrawal in humans, so it's usually tapered on or off. I am far from an expert in the effects of gabapentin on cats, though. However, it's worth noting that a 30 second google search produced results that all suggested that it can cause withdrawal in cats as well as humans.
Both links in KFlower's post also mention liquid gabapentin possibly containing xylitol. If your pet uses liquid gabapentin, call the vet and ask about the specific formulation of the medicine and whether it contains xylitol or not. The vet may not know off hand but can get that info. If the medicine was compounded at a pharmacy, call and ask.
Two of mine take Gabapentin for stress vet visits. The pill set out for both is 100 mg. That being said one is 13.5-14 pounds named Charlie (6.15-6.35 kg) the other is around 10 pounds named Braveheart (4.54 kg)
Gabapentin has one of the most bitter tastes I've ever tasted. I know that because I've always tasted all meds prior to giving them to my cats. After tasting it, I couldn't get that taste out of my mouth for hours, so I can fully understand the reaction of your cat. Try to drop the dose at the very back of her mouth.
Not cystitis, but my girl gets gabapentin to help control pain and inflamation from stomatitis. It really has helped. She had basically stopped eating and grooming herself because of the mouth pain. She's been on the gabapentin for several months with no side effects I can see. She's eating both wet and dry food normally.
I’m wondering if anyone has had their cat on gabapentin long term and has seen improvement in the side effects and if it has been effective in helping with anxiety and/or aggression. The vet also mentioned Paroxetine (Paxil) as an option that is supposed to have less gastrointestinal side effects.
We started using gabapentin for pain and a round of Adequan over a 5 month period, frequent dosage then once a month. Didn't seem to be helping much. My doctor prescribed Galiprant which was just approved last year and has won awards as a top arthritis drug for canines.
