Plainville first was inhabited by Europeans around 1650. By the 1660s, the land was incorporated as land for nearby Farmington.In the year 1869, it separated from Farmington due to the distance of the town center and the growth of Plainville downtown due to the installation of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and the Hartford, Providence, and Fishkill Railroad.

Plainfield is a census-designated place (CDP) and the namesake village in the town of Plainfield, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, United States. The population of the CDP was 178 at the 2020 census , [ 2 ] out of 2,459 in the entire town.
In Plainville, Route 72 has an exit to and from Route 372, an eastbound on-ramp from Route 10 via Route 372 and SR 511, and an eastbound offramp to Woodford Ave (SR 536). After crossing the Pequabuck River , it has a partial interchange with Route 177 before the freeway ends at Forestville Avenue and the western terminus of Route 372.

The section of Route 372 from Route 10 in Plainville to the Plainville-New Britain town line is designated the Joseph E. Tinty Memorial Highway. The section of Route 372 from the interchange with Route 72 in New Britain to the intersection with Route 71A and SR 571 in Berlin is designated the Polish Legion of American Veterans Memorial Highway.
