In October 1851 Couts resigned his Army commission and then took an appointed a Colonel in the aide de camp of Governor John Bigler. At his Ranch Guajome he found that San Diego County soil and climate could grow many types of agriculture crops. Couts was the first in San Diego County to plant vast orchards.
In 1998, Joan Kroc donated $87 million (equivalent to $163 million in 2023) to the Salvation Army to build and endow the first Kroc Center in San Diego, California, on what was an abandoned grocery store and other empty land. It was located on the southern West Coast of the United States, in the La Jolla community of San Diego, California. The facility was closed shortly after the war ended and few traces of the base remain.
