The 2-litre GT was available as a closed coupé and, later, as a convertible. The car was capable of 100 mph (161 km/h) with respectable acceleration. Horsepower and suspension improvements were made in line with Triumph's Mark 2 upgrade of the Vitesse in Autumn 1968, and the convertible was introduced at the same time.
The engine was next used in the Triumph Vitesse, a sports saloon based on the Herald, in 1962. [1] [3] In this application, the engine had a 66.75 mm (2.6 in) bore, reducing displacement to 1596 cc. [1] [4] The Vitesse was given the two-litre engine with the 74.6 mm bore in 1966. [4]
Both the 2000 and the Fury are powered by the 2.0 L Triumph 6-cylinder engine, although the engine in the Fury received the sump from the Triumph Vitesse and the intake manifold from the GT6. [8] With bore × stroke dimensions of 74.7 mm × 76 mm (2.941 in × 2.992 in), this overhead valve engine displaces 1,998 cc (121.9 cu in).
The Triumph Herald is a small two-door car introduced by Standard-Triumph of Coventry in 1959 and made through to 1971. The body design was by the Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti , and the car was offered in saloon , convertible , coupé , estate and van models, with the latter marketed as the Triumph Courier .
Triumph stopped production of the Vitesse in 1971, and Kastner sold the car in 1973. The Kastner-Brophy stable also included two Triumph TR6s, a Spitfire and a GT6. They also bought a Lola T192, which was first loaned to George Bignotti for the 1971 Questor Grand Prix , where it was driven by Al Unser . [ 8 ]
Hyde joined Triumph motorcycles as an apprentice in 1964. Following the factory closure at Meriden in 1973, Norman moved to the Kitts Green site run by Norton Triumph International. When that shut down in 1975, he used his redundancy payment to establish his own business, designing and selling performance parts for Triumph twins and triples.
