The form genus Ornatifilum was erected by Burgess and Edwards in 1991 to describe tubular fossils retrieved by acid maceration from the late Silurian. [2] It was originally intended as a form genus, to facilitate stratigraphy and environmental reconstruction; the fossils do not display enough features to classify them confidently, even at a kingdom level.
The term "small shelly fossils" was coined by Samuel Matthews and V. V. Missarzhevsky in 1975. [9] The term is often abbreviated to "small shellies" or "SSF". [3] It is quite a misnomer since, as Stefan Bengtson says, "they are not always small, they are commonly not shelly – and the term might equally well apply to Pleistocene periwinkles."
The fossils within the shale show a remarkable clarity and preservation due to the unique depositional characteristics of the lake and so the Messel pit represents a Konservat-Lagerstätte. The upper stratifications of the lake most certainly supported a variety of organisms, but the bottom was subject to little disturbance by current, spawning ...
The fossil’s features, a mix of modern and prehistoric traits, reinforces previous suggestions that amphibians’ evolution was complex, said Marc Jones, a curator of fossil reptiles at the ...
The first dinosaur fossils found in Hong Kong, likely from a large dinosaur, were put on display on Friday after they were found on a small, uninhabited outlying island, providing new evidence for ...
The skull of a dinosaur embryo from Argentina is providing surprising details about baby facial features present in one species from an important dinosaur group called titanosaurs that included ...
Cutaway diagram of Cloudina showing "living space" within the shell.. Cloudina varies in size from a diameter of 0.3 to 6.5 mm, and 8 to 150 mm in length. [4] Fossils consist of a series of stacked vase-like calcite tubes, whose original mineral composition is unknown, [6] but inferred to be high-magnesium calcite. [7]
The Hallidaya is a species of trilobozoan which has the shape of small circular-shaped fossils preserved as a mold. They are soft-bodied creatures approximately 4–32 mm (0.16–1.26 in) in diameter with an average of 10 mm (0.39 in) with a height of 2 mm (0.079 in) shaped like a dome.
