It was established by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 1983 to acquire operation of all commuter rail service in New York and Connecticut from Conrail, which itself had been formed in 1976 through the merging of a number of financially troubled railroads, and previously operated commuter railroad service under contract from the MTA. South Norwalk station is a commuter rail station in Norwalk, Connecticut, served by the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line. It is owned and managed by the Norwalk Transit District. The station is the point where the New Haven Line's Danbury Branch connects to the Northeast Corridor, as well as a peak-hour terminal for some express trains.
The plan for the trail is to run from Norwalk, Connecticut, to Danbury, Connecticut, stretching about 38 miles (61 km) passing through Wilton, Redding, and Ridgefield. The trail currently consists of a 1.6 miles (2.6 km) section in Norwalk with the trailheads at Matthews Park and New Canaan Avenue (Connecticut route 136).
