The identical sister chromatids have not yet condensed into the densely packaged chromosomes visible with the light microscope. This will take place during prophase I in meiosis. Growth 2 (G 2) phase: G 2 phase as seen before mitosis is not present in meiosis. Meiotic prophase corresponds most closely to the G 2 phase of the mitotic cell cycle.
Fluorescence microscope image of two mouse cell nuclei in prophase (scale bar is 5 μm). [2] Prophase (from Ancient Greek προ- 'before' and φάσις (phásis) 'appearance') is the first stage of cell division in both mitosis and meiosis. Beginning after interphase, DNA has already been replicated when the cell enters prophase.
Cell division in prokaryotes (binary fission) and eukaryotes (mitosis and meiosis). The thick lines are chromosomes, and the thin blue lines are fibers pulling on the chromosomes and pushing the ends of the cell apart. The cell cycle in eukaryotes: I = Interphase, M = Mitosis, G 0 = Gap 0, G 1 = Gap 1, G 2 = Gap 2, S = Synthesis, G 3 = Gap 3.
This image has been assessed under the valued image criteria and is considered the most valued image on Commons within the scope: Biology diagrams, Biology diagrams, and Meiosis. You can see its nomination here .
The eukaryotic cell cycle consists of four distinct phases: G 1 phase, S phase (synthesis), G 2 phase (collectively known as interphase) and M phase (mitosis and cytokinesis). M phase is itself composed of two tightly coupled processes: mitosis, in which the cell's nucleus divides, and cytokinesis, in which the cell's cytoplasm and cell membrane divides forming two daughter cells.
Female mammals and birds are born possessing all the oocytes needed for future ovulations, and these oocytes are arrested at the prophase I stage of meiosis. [26] In humans, as an example, oocytes are formed between three and four months of gestation within the fetus and are therefore present at birth.
[6] [7] When Hotta et al. in 1977 compared meiotic crossing-over (recombination) in lily and mouse they concluded that diverse eukaryotes share a common pattern. [8] This finding suggested that chromosomal crossing over is a general characteristic of eukaryotic meiosis.
In Streptococcus pneumoniae, transformation is induced by the DNA damaging agent mitomycin C. [18] These, and other, examples indicate that prokaryotic sex, like meiosis in simple eukaryotes, is an adaptation to stressful conditions. This observation suggests that the natural selection pressures maintaining meiosis in eukaryotes are similar to ...
