Interior design was led by Daniel Mayerle. [2] The 5 Series saloon was unveiled on 12 October 2016 [9] before making its public debut in January 2017 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. [10] BMW created The Escape, a short action film featuring a 540i M Sport, to promote the G30 5 Series. [11]
The BMW i5 and BMW i5 Touring are battery electric models of the 5 Series (G60/G61). The i5 saloon was announced in May 2023 with the conventional G60 5 Series, [25] while the i5 Touring was unveiled in February 2024. [2] It is built at the same Dingolfing assembly line as units with combustion engines and plug-in hybrids.
The 540i is standard with all-wheel drive as well as a 375-hp turbocharged inline-six engine. All variants—excluding the plug-in hybrid variants—feature a 48-volt mild hybrid system; this system consists of a 20 Ah lithium-ion and an electric motor /integrated starter-generator rated at 13 kW (17 hp) and 200 N⋅m (150 lbf⋅ft).
In 1991, BMW acquired a large percentage of the company, and Designworks started its first car exterior design project in 1993 for the 1998 BMW 3 Series (E46). In May 1995, BMW purchased the remaining percentage of Designworks. At this time artist David Hockney painted an Art Car in the studio.

The sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series consists of the BMW F10 (saloon version), F18 (long-wheelbase saloon), BMW F11 (wagon, marketed as Touring) and BMW F07 (fastback/hatchback, marketed as Gran Turismo) executive cars and were produced by BMW from January 2010 (for the 2011 model year) to 2017, with F10 being launched on 20 March 2010 to domestic market and F11 in the summer of 2010. The final design, developed by Davide Arcangeli [2] under BMW Design Director Chris Bangle, [3] [4] was approved in 2000 and German design patents filed on 16 April 2002. [6] The saloon was launched on 5 July 2003 in Europe and in October 2003 in North America. [7] [8] [9] In late 2004, the Touring models were introduced.
He left Designworks in 2005 to be promoted to head up the Brand Design Studio, under the direction of the BMW Group Design Director Chris Bangle, [3] and in 2009 became Director of BMW Group Design, succeeding Chris Bangle as the head of design for the company. [4] As head of group design he oversees the design work of BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce.
