A Big Bang Cannon and its box. The Big-Bang Cannon, also known as the Calcium Cannon, is an American toy cannon first manufactured in the early 20th-century. Numerous consumer fireworks injuries [1] convinced a physics professor at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to patent a "Gas Gun" in 1907, and the manufacturing of Big-Bang Cannons started in 1912, from the Gas Cannon Company.
Introduced in 1942, compared to the earlier Type 98 20 mm AA machine cannon, Type 2 20 mm had higher maximum rate of fire, could be elevated to 95 degrees and had a central fire-control system. [3] The central fire-control system developed for the Type 2 could control and direct six of the guns at once.
As the loading was made in advance and separately, breech-loading swivel guns were quick-firing guns for their time. [16] An early description of a swivel gun puts the weight of the gun at 118 kilograms (260 lb), equipped with three chambers for rotations, each 18 kilograms (40 lb) in weight, and firing a 280 grams (9.9 oz) lead shot. The NR-23 was later replaced by the Afanasev Makarov AM-23 automatic cannon which had a higher firing rate. The AM-23 was used in turreted installations for bombers . It was a gas-operated weapon, weighed 43 kg (95 lb) and was capable of a substantially higher rate of fire (1,200–1,300 rounds per minute).
Breech-loading swivel gun with mug-shaped chamber and wedge to hold it in place. Although breech-loading is often considered a modern innovation which facilitated the loading of cannons, [1] breech-loading swivel guns were invented in the 14th century, [2] and used worldwide from the 16th century onward by numerous countries, many of them non-European.
The original design was based on the 19 mm Becker cannon cartridge by the Coenders brothers at Stahlwerke Becker of Reinickendorf, Germany. [2] [3] Development commenced in 1913 and was therefore already advanced when the War Ministry issued a specification in June 1915 calling for an aircraft cannon of under 37 mm caliber and 70 kg weight capable of firing a 10-round burst.
