Santa Clarita Elementary School opened in 1960, located 1.8 mi (2.9 km) north along Seco Creek. It's the only elementary school in the district whose original classrooms are located within a brick building resembling a roundhouse.

The first school in the district was Newhall Elementary. The school opened in 1876, near the current location of the Saugus Cafe. The school is named for Henry Mayo Newhall, as is the town. The school and the town of Newhall moved two years later, to a location 2 miles south of its original location.
On November 14, 2019, a mass shooting took place at Saugus High School. That morning, Nathaniel Berhow, a 16-year-old junior at the school, used a semi-automatic pistol to shoot five other students, killing two of them, before turning his gun on himself. The shooting lasted 16 seconds.

On May 26, 2022, two days after the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, dozens of Saugus High School students walked out of class and protested in the school's quad, advocating for stronger gun control laws. Some students left the school entirely and staged a protest at the corner of Centurion Way and Bouquet Canyon Road. [8]
