[2] By 1948 the private gardens were reportedly identified as "one of the ten best cactus and succulent gardens in the world." They opened to the public in 1954.

The Old Sugar Mill of Kōloa was part of the first commercially successful sugarcane plantation in Hawaiʻi, which was founded in Kōloa on the island of Kauai in 1835 by Ladd & Company.
