Owned by the Croft family since 1085, the castle and estate passed out of their hands in the 18th century, before being repurchased by the family in 1923. The Chaytor baronetcy, of Croft in the County of York and of Witton Castle in the County of Durham, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 30 September 1831 for William Chaytor, an industrialist and Whig politician who served as MP for Richmond in the first Reform Parliament. [1] He built Clervaux Castle on the manor of Croft.

The closest large town is the market town of Leominster, 4.5 miles (7 km) to the south. Within the parish is the National Trust property of Croft Castle and Parkland.
