In 1998, the Fiesta Bowl featured the first BCS National Championship Game, which Tennessee won over Florida State, 23–16. Starting with the 1999 season, the Big 12 Conference champion received an automatic bid to the Fiesta Bowl in years when it was not slated as the BCS title game, an arrangement that continued to the end of the BCS era.

Since the establishment of the team in 1895, OU has appeared in 57 bowl games and has a record of 31 victories, 26 losses, and one tie.
