X4 Master of the Desert Nomads was written by David Cook, and was published by TSR in 1983 as a 32-page booklet with an outer folder; this module was the first in the Desert Nomads series. [1] The cover was by Harry Quinn, with interior art by Jeff Easley and Keith Parkinson .
The booklet also contains a "Monster Guide" of statblocks and descriptions of monsters not otherwise featured in the boxed set, and a description of the city of Skullport. The booklet has a detached cover, with cover art by Jeff Easley, and maps of some of the encounters on the inside, with cartography by David Sutherland.

The Draconomicon, the first book for Dungeons & Dragons by this title, was designed by Nigel Findley for the 2nd edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, with four adventures designed by Christopher Kubasik, Carl Sargent, John Terra, and William Tracy.
