Saline solution for irrigation. Normal saline (NSS, NS or N/S) is the commonly used phrase for a solution of 0.90% w/v of NaCl, 308 mOsm/L or 9.0 g per liter. Less commonly, this solution is referred to as physiological saline or isotonic saline (because it is approximately isotonic to blood serum, which makes it a physiologically normal solution).
In this family, dextran-40 (MW: 40,000 Da), has been the most popular member for anticoagulation therapy. Close to 70% of dextran-40 is excreted in urine within the first 24 hours after intravenous infusion, while the remaining 30% are retained for several more days.
Dakin's solution is a dilute solution of sodium hypochlorite (0.4% to 0.5%) and other stabilizing ingredients, traditionally used as an antiseptic, e.g. to cleanse wounds in order to prevent infection. [1] The preparation was for a time called also Carrel–Dakin solution or Carrel–Dakin fluid. [2]

Dextran and oxidized dextran can be used to crosslink gelatin microspheres to reduce gelatin dissolution, which slows the drug release rate. These dextran/gelatin microspheres can be used to provide slow-release of TRAPP-Br, which is a cancer therapeutic. [ 8 ]
Some of the solutions that are used include 32% Dextran (outdated and known anaphylactic), normal saline, Ringer's lactate with or without heparin (5000 IU in 200 ml) and Adept (4% icodextrin).
Dextran sulphate sodium (DSS), or dextran sodium sulphate (or any of the former with "sulfate") is a synthetic sulphated polysaccharide with anticoagulant activity used in immunological research to induce colitis. [1] [2] Dextran polymer molecules with a molecular weight of 36–50 kDa are frequently used to this end. [2]
