INS Andamans is a Nicobar-class troopship.These large multi-role troop ships were converted from merchant ships which were originally ordered by the Ministry of Shipping for service with the Shipping Corporation of India that were later acquired by the Indian Navy for troop transport duties.
Port Blair is the entry point for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is connected with mainland India by both air and sea. It is a two to three-hour flight from mainland India to Port Blair's Veer Savarkar International Airport and three to four days by sea to reach Kolkata , Chennai , or Visakhapatnam from Haddo Wharf in the city.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Regulation 1956 [9] prohibits travel to the island and any approach closer than five nautical miles (nine kilometres), in order to protect the remaining tribal community from "mainland" infectious diseases against which they likely have no acquired immunity.
