Due to frequent flooding of Ohio University's campus, the Army Corps of Engineers re-channelized a section of the Hocking River in Athens during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Between Nelsonville and Athens, the Hocking today is roughly paralleled by a rail trail, the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway.

Cyclists stop along their way to the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway. The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway, an 18-mile (29 km) long bicycle path, connects Nelsonville with the county seat of Athens. The Nelsonville portion of the bikeway runs from the Inn at Hocking Technical College to the Nelsonville Public Square district.

The Athens-Belpre Rail-Trail is a new trailway now being developed in southeast Ohio. It will link Athens, Ohio, in Athens County, with Belpre, Ohio, in Washington County. It will link on the west with the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway. There are hopes of eventually connecting with the North Bend Rail Trail in West Virginia.
