Kurzgesagt (/ ˌ k ʊər t s ɡ ə ˈ z ɑː k t /; German for "In a nutshell", "in short", or literally "shortly said"; German pronunciation: [ˈkʊʁt͡sɡəˌzaːkt]) is a German animation and design studio founded by Philipp Dettmer.
Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell → Kurzgesagt – Simply a more commonly recognisable name for the studio. It should be noted that on their website, the studio refers to themselves more as " kurzgesagt " more than " in a nutshell " [1] , and on social media their name is simply " Kurzgesagt " on Facebook and Twitter [2] [3] .

In 2020, animation studio Kurzgesagt released the app Universe in a Nutshell, which took inspiration from The Scale of the Universe. [10] [11] The main-belt asteroid 10003 Caryhuang was officially named by the International Astronomical Union on June 16, 2021, partly in recognition of Cary Huang's involvement in The Scale of the Universe. [2]
The Universe in a Nutshell is a 2001 book about theoretical physics by Stephen Hawking. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It is generally considered a sequel and was created to update the public concerning developments since the multi-million-copy bestseller A Brief History of Time was published in 1988.
A popular interactive visualization tool by creators of the series that is on Wikipedia is The Scale of the Universe, which has attracted coverage [1] [2] [3] and was featured on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day, [4] and inspired the Kurzgesagt app "Universe in a Nutshell".
